Electronic Temperature Controllers

2243A Electronic Temperature Controllers

Truly, the test of whether a manufacturer understands the dynamic of transformer heat transfer and the role temperature plays in testing the life of a transformer, is the design of a a fully digital transformer temperature controller.

Electronic controllers provide a more sophisticated analysis of a transformer’s onload heating characteristics than the I2R (I squared R) model of the mechanical WTI and give the operator more information on a loading guide for oil immersed transformers as formulated in IEC standard 60354. This standard is a guide to operating a transformer at loads greater than the rated load (greater than unity) which can then be offset by periods of operation at loads less than the rated load (less than unity) to minimise the net aging process associated with thermal degradation of the cellulose insulation.
